Troubles upgrading to Ubuntu 14.04 on my laptop

So I have been waiting to upgrade my old dell latitude laptop from Ubuntu 13.10 to 14.04. I did not upgrade to the beta release of 14.04 because I did not want to experience any beta trouble. I had upgraded my desktop to 14.04 with no problems and I was very happy with the upgrade. The next day I it was time to upgrade my laptop. After updating my laptop using software center, I was not presented with an upgrade option, so i opened a terminal and typed: sudo update-manager -d. After entering my password, update manager updated my computer and then presented me with an upgrade option. I clicked upgrade. My laptop went through all of the upgrade protocol then got a little hung up at
Clean Up. Since my computer was hung up, I had to power it off. I powered the computer back on and of course the computer didn't start. It said the USB was not connected. I powered the system off and back on and choose the recovery option at Grub. Then I choose the repair packages option. The computer hung up again. To make a long story short, I went through a few other steps to try to get the laptop to finish the update but to no avail. After this, I downloaded the Ubuntu 14.04 ISO and burned and installation disk. I installed it into my laptop and choose to repair my installation. Still this did not work. I am pretty sure this did not work because of the prior failed installation. After hours of trying to avoid deleting everything on my computer and starting form scratch I gave up. Since all of my important information is stored on google drive, I choose to replace my old ubuntu installation using the 14.04 installation DVD. This worked. The laptop is up and running. I have all of my important information thanks to Grive tools. The only downside is my windows disk for Virtual box was deleted, something I could have backed up. But I still have my windows XP installation disk. Unfortunately I need my windows xp to run an estimating program for my business.
For anyone upgrading to Ubuntu 14.04 from 13.10, I would suggest burning an installation disk and choosing to upgrade. It seems to be a safer idea than doing an internet upgrade. And remember to always backup your information.
